Racehorse Profile
Our syndicates have enjoyed plenty of success with Ollie Pears over the last few years, especially with our two-year-olds. Working with a limited budget Ollie had managed to furnish our shareholders with horses that are robust, competitive, and capable of winning races. As such, we've been very successful in sourcing first and second season sires that punch above their weight. Ice Cold Alex is by Soldier's Call, who has already cemented himself as a prolific source of smart, precocious two-year-olds and Ice Cold Alex did his part in 2025 to maintain that reputation..
The gelding was named, Ice Cold Alex. He is related to 'Iceman', Soldiers Call (his father) and Lady Alexander (Group 3 winner and his grandmother). His name is a play on the famous film 'Ice Cold in Alex' starring John Mills and Sylvia Simms. As you would expect, his stable name is 'Alex'
Ollie explained:
'Being an April foal, he was a little late, but you really wouldn't know from his size and scope. He walked really well, with that little bit of swagger I always like to see, and he was well prepared for the sale. I was really pleased to come home with him, as he's a proper sprinting type and perfect for the job I had in mind for him.'
Ice Cold Alex wintered very well before his juvenile campaign and the reports coming from Ollie were increasingly encouraging as the gelding appeared to be showing plenty on the gallops. There was an increasing sense of excitement as he neared his racecourse debut at Pontefract 14th April. As we mentioned he was an April foal and so his debut came only 10 days after his second birthday.
There was nothing immature about Ice Cold Alex that day. Perfectly behaved in the stalls, he pinged the gates and helped set the gallop in good sectionals for a youngster. Just when it looked like he might get swallowed up in the final furlong he found a bit extra and won going away again by a length.
It was clear we had a proper racehorse on our hands. The form of the Pontefract race was franked he then headed to Beverley for a very hot Conditions race. Again he was doing the hard work and was not beaten far in a race where the front rank all went on to run big races at Royal Ascot. He struggled a little bit at Newcastle next time out but bounced right back to form at Hamilton finishing second to a very reliable yardstick. After the Hamilton race he was rated 79. Not surprisingly, Ollie Pears is looking forward to training Ice Cold Alex as a three-year-old in 2026.
Ollie remarked, “Even off his current mark, I think he could be very competitive. Although he was out quite early we managed his races as a two-year-old and with another winter to grow and develop and I think we should have a great season with him next year.”
Trainer Ollie Pears has done a superb job for us over many years of bringing along horses that stay fit, happy and robust. With Ice Cold Alex looking to fit that bill he could be around for several years competing at a decent level.
“I’m already quite excited about his prospects as a three-year-old. He goes on good ground and might well go with a little bit of cut but probably not at the extremes. At the moment he’s quick enough for 5f but I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets 6f next year and it’s certainly something I’d expect to be trying at some point.”
Ollie added, “I’m sure we can go places with this one. I had a nice crop of juveniles in 2025 but this chap was definitely one of the best and one that I think can carry his form into next season.”
Ice Cold Alex looks a genuine prospect for the 2026 season. He won’t need to improve much to be contesting some valuable sprint Handicaps and could well take his shareholders to some top-grade courses. He looks a great opportunity for shareholders to get involved in a young horse that could be competing at a high level for a number of years.
Ice Cold Alex is currently at Ollie Pears' yard in Malton. Shareholders will be able to visit the yard in spring (usually April) before the season really gets going and also again in Autumn as the season is beginning to wind down.
Form & Race Plans
The race plans for this colt will be determined by his level of ability shown at home and on the course in 2026.
As Ice Cold Alex heads into the 2026 season with a rating in the high 70s he will almost certainly begin his campaign in 0-80 or 0-85 Handicaps. It is possible if he has improved and developed over the winter that Ollie might step him up in grade and contest some Class 3 or even Class 2 Handicaps. There will be plenty of options for him.If he improves significantly, there is always the possibility that he could find his way into Listed company and contest some ‘black-type’ races. These are for the top level horses but there are sometimes good opportunities available.
Your online Racehorse Manager will provide full details of all developments in terms of the colt's progress and race planning as the season progresses.
Ice Cold Alex 2026 Guarantee
We expect to get 4-8 runs and sometimes more from all our older horses per share period, however, you should expect periods of no racing as a result of recuperation from injury or training setbacks. This share period starts properly at the start of the turf season on April 1st 2025 and runs through the turf season until November 1st 2025, however, we will be reporting on the horse before the share period starts (from January 2025) should we have anything of importance to share with shareholders.
During the season the horse may be rested or have time away from the track to recover and it is quite normal for a flat horse to have periods of 3-6 weeks of rest between races. Young horses are particularly susceptible to sore shins, bone chips, and growing pains, and can need a greater time to recover between races.
We provide guarantees with all our racehorses. If this horse has a season-ending injury and has not already RACED TWICE during the share period, we will replace it with an alternative horse for the remainder of the season. Replacement horses may not be of the same quality, are provided with no further guarantees and no alternative choice can be provided. Prizemoney cannot be paid on any replacements, but all other benefits such as yard visits and race day badges are available.
As a shareholder you must understand that we cannot guarantee your horse's performance, a specific volume of runs (beyond our minimum guarantee) or that runs will be evenly spaced throughout the share period. This is the chance you take when owning any racehorse and participating in this ownership experience. If you will be disappointed with only 2-3 runs from your racehorse during the season, or become easily frustrated with poor performances then please DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN THIS OR ANY OTHER RACEHORSE.
We believe in being crystal clear with our shareholders - any participation in racehorse ownership is a risk, and we are unable to make any refunds because of poor runs, lack of prize money, or share periods that finish early due to injury or retirement - as training and livery fees for the horse still remain whether they are racing or not, and part of your lease payment covers the build-up to the season. This risk is the chance all shareholders take, as we do ourselves when participating in the ownership of racehorses.
